These diamonds, chemically and optically identical to natural diamonds, are produced by two methods: HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) and CVD (chemical vapor deposition).

De Beers, the historical leader in natural diamonds, released its preliminary 2025 results showing revenues under pressure. The group has launched its own lab-grown diamond brand, Lightbox, positioned as an accessible range (starting at $800 per carat) to differentiate from its premium natural diamonds. This dual strategy reflects the reality of a rapidly changing market.

Lab-grown diamonds cost on average 60% to 80% less than natural diamonds of the same quality. Their environmental footprint is significantly lower (no mining), which particularly appeals to millennials and Generation Z, for whom ethics and sustainability are important purchasing criteria.

India dominates the cutting and polishing of lab-grown diamonds, just as it does for natural diamonds, with the city of Surat as a global hub. China is the leading producer of rough lab-grown diamonds. The United States remains the primary consumer market.

E-commerce platforms like Brilliant Earth and Blue Nile have significantly developed their lab-grown diamond offerings, with online customization tools (choice of stone, setting, engraving) and quality certification (GIA, IGI). Blockchain traceability is beginning to be used to guarantee ethical origin.

Traditional watchmaking and haute joaillerie maintain demand for exceptional natural diamonds. Auctions of rare stones (Christie's, Sotheby's) continue to break records. The market is clearly segmenting between accessible luxury (lab-grown diamonds) and heritage ultra-luxury (rare natural diamonds).
